Search engines have come a long way in very short period of time. I'm going to talk to you for the next few moments about how these changes have made it possible to not only have your web site listed at the very top of search engines but at such a low cost it will make you do a double take.

In the early days of search engines the only way to get to the top of the rankings was to have a web site that included very crafty metatags and a lot of hidden words and phrases with white text on white backgrounds etc., this was producing erroneous or unfair search results. Search engines then had to take steps to make it more fair for everyone and tightened most of the free submission methods.

It's important to understand exactly how search engines block people trying to trick them into placing them in a top 10 spot. The search engine programmers, must try to assure that users/searchers get the most accurate results. To accomplish this, they eliminate the ability for people with irrelevant information on their sites to trick the system to get fake or improved search results. You may be thinking right now, so you mean that software I purchased that claimed it guarantees me a top 10 position is no longer of any value? No not exactly it's still OK to use this software but I have a much better idea that's going to make you a ton of money and get you that top 10 position.

It's called pay per click advertising and it's the hottest thing on the Internet right now, as a matter of fact it just can't be beat for price, return on investment, and of course the bottom line-sales! The first thing that you need to understand about pay per click advertising is that all of the major search engines are now pay per click oriented, that is, the search results are both free and paid results.

The best way to understand how pay per click advertising works is to do an exercise. I would like you to visit www.Google.com. When you get there click on a link called "advertising options" and proceed to a page call Google ad words. The first thing you should do is get a free account which can be set up by clicking on the sign-up link and proceeding to the sign-up form where you can get your account started. Once you are into your customer area, or back office you will notice you didn't pay to get this far. It's also important to note that at your disposal is over $2 million worth of software. This software has been written with you in mind, in that, you will see what all of the visitors visiting Google.com are searching for. The software is designed so that you can capitalize on the key search terms entered on the main page by visitors. By following the instructions carefully you can create what's called an ad campaign, again no charge, and pay pennies to be listed when somebody searches under a specific term or phrase.

The reason pay per click has been so successful is because you don't pay when people see your ad, you only pay when people click on your ad and actually go to your website. Using the options in your Google ad words account it's possible to limit the amount you spend on your campaign per day. In other words, you can completely control the budget for directing direct traffic to your web site.

Lead gathering or lead capture

Now listen up! I am going to share with you a secret that has taken me about $10,000 worth of wasted advertising dollars to figure out, thankfully you don't have to spend that amount of money. At one time I used to send all of our pay per click visitors to the home page of our web site, which was a big and costly mistake. I decided to look at what our competitors were doing and see exactly where the links/ads in their pay per click campaign were going. I noticed right away they were directing all leads on their Google ad link to a form on their web site. I also discovered the form was very short and basic, it included only a few benefits of filling out the form and also mentioned a gift or offer of some type. I decided I would give it a try and created a short form for Worldprofit.com which included only room for a first name, last name, e-mail address, and phone number along with a motivating offer for a FREE TRIAL MEMBERSHIP AND ADVERTISING PACKAGE! Guess what happened? For every 100 people that clicked on the ad, we got about 40 sign-ups to our form which meant we paid about $50 for 40 leads which made the ad cost a little over a dollar per lead! In the web business these are considered live leads and are worth about four dollars each on the open market. Of course you can guess the second goal of this whole ad campaign, you guessed right, return on investment.

If we go back to the initial idea of getting a top 10 search listing at any of the major search engines you can now see how pay per click is the way to go. When you get your free account to Google Ads, take your time, it's important you understand that you can get better and better at this for very low cost. There are tools within Google that will allow you to anticipate how many people will view and click on any ad campaign you create. The way I like to do it is to set up three or four different campaigns using a different test ads. Each ad campaign links to a different form so that we can tell which ad is producing the most relevant and responsive leads. It's also wise to make changes to the form you are using to gather leads from your pay per click campaign. After testing and you've found the most powerful ad wording for your pay per click campaign and your lead form, then increase the bid amount you spend. You can then continue to generate traffic to that form and simply multiply your returns as you sell more and more product. If you are clever, you will keep all of your leads in a central database called a prospect management system and follow-up until you are assured of the sale. You can even go as far as to sell these leads to your affiliates or associates, basically having them fund your ad program for you.

How to keep your ads at the top and stay there

In the olden days people had to rely on the brute force method which involved learning the newest latest tricks to fool the search engines into bringing up their page as a top 10 search results. This was time consuming, results were sporadic and tricks would only work for asort period of time. Using pay per click it's a different story and requires patience and consistency, and by that I mean logging in at least two times per week and watching to see if anybody has outbid you on your key words. That's right, people can outbid you to get higher placement. Although this is not a big problem you should try to keep yourself in the top three places so that visitors will find you more easily. I like to keep tabs on our advertising in the three main search engines. We use, goclick.com, Google.com and Overture.com As you may know, Overture was just recently purchased by Yahoo, this is a good thing because Yahoo will do a great job in keeping that software the best it can be for your benefit.

Here is a very clever trick that I like to use which has allowed me to generate a ton of very low cost traffic. I look under my competitors' names, that is, I search for my own product or service at Google thereby allowing me to see what paid ads show up. Once I find ads that are relevant to what I'm selling I go into my BackOffice Google account and find out how much it would cost to block that word or phrase.. You will be surprised to find out in many cases that it will cost you only a few cents to outbid the third or fourth spot and get your ad placed above a competitor's keyword. For example, say you know a company by name that sells a product similar to yours, search under that company's name and will find in most cases they are the top search return but there will be paid ads that also show up as pay per click ads.

Here's another hint.... If you are aware of a new catch phrase that is a little known than you can bid on that word and pay very little. Since the Google computers have not logged that little known word the bid rate is very low and you can capitalize on both the bid price and the hits. However, once the word becomes main stream people start searching for that word, and thus the bid price increases. Example, the word "blackberry" five years ago was pretty benign word and a very cheap word to bid on. Today, thanks to a company called Research in Motion developing a popular PDA called a "blackberry" the word is now a very popular search term and a very expensive word to bid on.

Where do we go from here?

As you can see the search engine game is more fair than it used to be because it costs money and there are fewer tricks, just simple bidding and outbidding. This is a good thing for legitimate advertisers like yourself and it's a great way to generate traffic to your site consistently without spending a huge amount of money. Tie into this the fact that pay per click campaigns like that at Google offer excellent tracking and reporting software at no charge, and you have a very good deal. The best way to research pay per click is to enter the term of interest into a search engine like Google, Yahoo, AOL or even Microsoft's search engine.

Final words

I would like to leave you with one final idea. Imagine that after reading this report you decide to apply what I have taught you and master pay per click search engines and advertising campaigns? Yes, a business idea should be being hatched in your mind! This is a very hot market and you will have an in-demand skill! You'll have the ability to get people to pay you to run pay per click ad campaigns for them and gather leads into a database using your web site forms. You can charge hundreds of dollars per month to do this and as you get better it will take you only a little time each and every day to keep your customer's ads paid, updated and current. Plus, you can use the idea of lead co-ops and get people to fund a major act campaign which generates hundreds of fresh leads per month which you divide up between participants on a daily basis. But wait, be sure to explain to your customers that as part of the deal you also get access to those leads to sell them your service or product. If you are clever and get a good group of people who pay you to place ads to generate leads you end up getting all of your leads for free, and that is incredibly valuable!
